ASSESSMENT

Assessment may include written or online knowledge questions, observation of practical tasks, workplace-style scenarios, verbal questioning and supporting documentation. Exact assessment activities depend on the nationally recognised unit or qualification.

TASMANIA POLICE GUIDANCE
Applying for a baton and handcuff exemption
Tasmania Police has provided the following guidance on applying for an exemption to carry batons and handcuffs.

- Approx. 2–4 weeks
Application process
There is currently no application form. Applicants are required to submit a written request for an exemption; an email request is acceptable.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Hold a current Security General Guarding licence; and
- Be actively employed within the security industry.
Training requirements
Applicants must complete the relevant baton and handcuff training before applying for an exemption.
Employer involvement
Applicants must be employed within the security industry to be eligible for the exemption. Applications cannot be made solely to improve future employment opportunities.
Supporting documentation
Applications should include:
- Employer letter
A current letter from the applicant’s employer outlining the requirements necessitating the use of batons and handcuffs and supporting the exemption request;
- Training evidence
Evidence that the relevant training competencies have been successfully completed;
- Security Licence
A copy of the applicant’s Security Licence (back and front);
- Covering email
A covering email requesting the exemption; and
- Contact details
Current contact details, including a postal address if different.
Separate exemptions
In most circumstances, a single exemption will cover both batons and handcuffs, provided the relevant requirements for both have been met.
Fees and processing times
There is currently no application fee for an exemption application. Processing times may vary depending on the complexity of the application and the information provided; however, applicants should allow approximately 2 to 4 weeks for assessment and processing.
